Diploma (HD) / BSc Degree or equivalent with minimum 10 (for HD) or 5 (for BSc) years experience in process operations including a minimum of 4 years on specific units in the designated area. Other combinations of education & experience may be acceptable for this position. Must have a detailed knowledge of all equipment and procedures relating to unit operations, emergencies, shutdown and start-up activities, ESD (emergency shutdown) system, maintenance and safety. Must have a good knowledge of DCS (Distributed Control System) / Analogue Control system, Advanced Control equipment, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems. Must have demonstrated competency to operate control panel through previous experience. Must have proven Supervisory experience and sound organizing abilities and be able to issue, clear and concise instructions during emergencies. Must be able to write (in English language) clear instructions in the Daily Order Book, Unit turnover and other correspondence as necessary to perform job function. Monitors unit operations and initiates adjustments to unit parameters to meet product specifications with minimum loss and product degradation. Prepares work orders to correct defects and submits other wordlists for repairs at unit shutdowns to ensure availability of operation of standby equipment and to ascertain availability and serviceability of all emergency and Fire equipment. Supervises operation of all units assigned when conditions are abnormal and exercises personal control when conditions are critical, i.e. during emergencies to safeguard the units and equipment under the job holders’ control to ensure efficient & timely safe shutdown and start-up of the assigned units. Directs the preparation of equipment for maintenance work and stipulates safety precautions to ensure proper isolation and decommissioning of equipment before maintenance work begins. Directs equipment testing and recommissioning upon completion of work to ensure compliance with best operating & safe work practises / procedures. Closely monitors unit parameters, discusses problems and operating changes with Supervisors and position relief to keep abreast of all changes and current state of unit operations. Chairs monthly First stage safety meetings and prepares reports to improve safety awareness among the Shift personnel to ensure a safe working environment and prevent/eliminate accidents. Champions safe work practices and procedure adherence through “Leading by Example” and enforcement of company EH&S / PSM regulations, practices, procedures and standards. Monitors progress of trainees, prepares appraisals and evaluation reports to enhance knowledge and competency of the Job Holder’s shift personnel so that they carry out their duties in a safe & efficient manner.
